BREAKING: FDA Takes Aim At Juul With Youth Tobacco Prevention Plan

Posted by Customer Service

The FDA announced Tuesday that it is moving forward with a Youth Tobacco Prevention Plan to tackle underage vaping and smoking. The initiative specifically targets the Juul pod system, which has received bad press lately because of its alleged use by teens and high school students.

The Youth Tobacco Prevention Plan will:

    • Issue warning letters to retailers who sell Juul pod systems to minors
    • Conduct a “large-scale nationwide blitz” of retail establishments
    • Require Juul to submit documents to better understand the reportedly high rates of youth use and the particular youth appeal of these products
    • Take steps to foreclose sales of Juul to minors on the Internet

FDA Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb suggested that the portability, high nicotine levels, and “appearance that closely resembles a USB flash drive” of the Juul may be appealing to children.

The Youth Tobacco Prevention Plan is not limited to Juul products, though Juul seems to be the catalyst for the action.

The announcement comes just a few months after the FDA announced its growing support of e-cigarettes.
